14-year-old lad accused of 'improper public behavior

  RIYADH – A 14-year-old boy was arrested by police in Saudi Arabia for dancing the "Maracena" on a road in Riyadh. A video of the boy, whose nationality is unknown, was first posted on social media in July last year but was taken down. It resurfaced on Twitter last week. The boy is shown in the 45-second video dancing to the 1993 hit dance song by Los Del Rio in front of cars on a pedestrian crossing on Prince Mohamed bin Abdulaziz Road in Riyadh. The boy appears to have disrupted traffic as the cars stopped as he danced on the crossing. Col. Ati bin Atiya al-Qarshi, spokesman for the police, was quoted by the Middle East Eye as saying that the boy had been apprehended "after relevant evidence had been gathered and confidential investigations had been completed." It was unclear if the boy will be charged. The clip has divided netizens. Some called the boy a "hero" while others said his behavior was "immoral." A BBC report said because of the lack of codified penal law in Saudi Arabia, officials and judges have broad discretion in the arrest and punishment of children in the ultra-conservative country.
