Lad threatened to kill himself because his mother left him to go abroad
DUBAI – Authorities counselled a 13-year-old boy and brought him to a shelter in Sharjah after he threatened to kill himself because his mother had left him in their flat in Al Qusais to go abroad.
The lad called Dubai Police and told them that his mother was going to travel to another country and leave him in their home with Dh5,000 cash and food stocked in the refrigerator.
According to Dubai Police Human Rights Department director Brig. Dr Mohammad Al Murr, an officer who received the boy's call tried to calm down the boy while his location was being pinpointed and a police team could reach him.
A team from the Dubai Police Women and Children Protection Department reached the boy's home and managed to convince the lad to open the door.
Women and Children Protection Department director Lt. Col. Saeed Rashid Al Heli said the teenager was crying when they reached the flat.
Al Heli spoke to the lad and convinced him to open the door. "He had cut his hand with a sharp tool and also damaged the furniture. He said his mother taught him how to cook and told him to call the police if he needed anything," Al Heli said.
Reports said the mother, an Arab national who is separated from her Emirati husband, was raising the boy by herself after a court granted her custody of the lad. She had left for a European country, reports added.
Al Murr said: "It is negligence. The mother told him she was traveling for treatment but she wasn't sick and was attending to a private matter."
Al Heli was quoted by reports as saying that the boy's mother "was fabricating stories to make the boy hate his father."
Al Heli also said the boy's mother said the teenager that his father used to beat him when he was younger and that he wasn't spending any money on his education.
"But the truth is that the man was putting money in the mother's account and wanted to look after his son but she refused to let him do so," said Al Heli.
The boy initially refused to meet his father out of fear that the latter would hurt him but later consented.
Reports said the father asked the prosecution to transfer the boy's custody to him.
