Terrorists threaten to blow up Egypt pyramids, temple as authorities downplay threat to ancient sites

  CAIRO - Daesh militants have threatened to blow up Egypt's famous landmarks, includuing the pyramids, Sphinx and the temple in Nimrud. A video released by the terrorist group last week showed a militant vowing to destroy what he called "ancient sites built by infidels". The Ministry of Interior has rdered security be tightened across the nation’s tourist and archaeological areas in response to the latest threat, private newspaper Al Chorouk reported. However, on Saturday Egyptian authorities downplayed the threat. “These are unrealistic threats,” the Dar Al Ifta, an official Islamic institution in charge of passing fatwas (edicts) to Muslims in Egypt, said in a statement on Saturday. Daesh terrorists have already destroyed several ancient sites in Iraq and Syria. “The terrorist organisation demolished antiquities and historic temples only after controlling the areas that housed these artefacts. This is unlikely to happen in Egypt, which is a strong country having valiant armed forces and police,” Dar Al Ifta said. “These threats are just aimed at undermining tourism in Egypt and depriving the country of an important foreign currency source," it added. Egypt's tourism numbers have dwindled in recent years, beginning with the 2011 revolt and terrorist-perpetuated plane crash last October that killed 224 people.
