  Houston-based billionaire Tilman Fertitta has agreed to buy the Houston Rockets for US$2.2 billion – a record purchase price for an NBA team. The sale was announced on Tuesday but the terms were not disclosed. The sale contract will be sent to the NBA Board of Governors for approval. In a statement released by his team, Fertitta said: "I am truly honored to have been chosen as the next owner of the Houston Rockets. This is a life-long dream come true." Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, for his part, said in a statement: "I am excited to welcome and pass the torch to Tilman." "He is a Houstonian, business leader and committed to the success and excellence of the Rockets both on and off the basketball court. I have personally known Tilman for over 24 years and don't think I could have found anyone more capable of continuing the winning tradition of our Houston Rockets." Citing a league source, ESPN said Fertitta and Alexander agreed in principle to the sale of franchise early this week. The sale of the Rockets to Fertitta is indeed a dream come true for the local billionaire because back in 1993, Fertitta had offered to buy the Rockets for US$81 million but the team was sold to Alexander for US$85 million. Alexander announced a few months back that he is putting up the Rockets for sale after consulting his family and friends. Forbes magazine had earlier placed the Rockets' value at US$1.65 billion. Fertitta is from Galveston, Texas and owns Landry's, Inc., one of the nation's biggest restaurant corporations, and Golden Nugget Casinos and Hotels. If the sale is approved by the NBA board, the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas will be unable to offer betting on Rockets games to avoid conflict of interest. The Rockets said in a statement that Fertitta has no other partners in connection with the transaction, which also includes operation of the Toyota Center in Houston. ESPN said Fertitta has watched Rockets game at the courtside for several years. League sources told ESPN that the Rockets received many offers starting at US$2 billion. The Rockets admitted that the timing of the sale comes at an unfortunate time when Houston is recovering from devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.
