Thais at home, UAE continue to mourn Bhumibol

  DUBAI/BANGKOK – Thousands of Thais streamed into the gates of Bangkok’s Grand Palace on Saturday (October 29) to pay tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, while in Dubai, Thais continued to mourn their king’s death. In Bangkok, the public was granted its first chance to enter the throne hall where the body of King Bhumibol Adulyadej lay in a coffin near a gilded urn. Crowds swelled to 100,000, according to a monitoring centre outside the palace. Bhumibol, who died aged 88 two weeks ago, was adored by many of his subjects. Thailand has declared an official mourning period of one year. The Dubai expat said her mother sent her a copy of the letter from the Thai Royal palace announcing the king’s death. “I asked my mother, ‘Is it real?’ The moment I knew that our king died I cried so much,” Sukpab said, “until now I still don’t want to believe he is gone.” “We lost a great king who showed a lot of dedication to his people. King Bhumibol worked non-stop for 70 years without complaining. There can be no one like him,” said Thornthep Wongkalasin. Nantaporn, an architecture student, described Bhumibol as the “father of the nation”. “He was like our dad who worked so hard all the time without vacation or holiday and did everything for betterment of his people for 70 years.
