A movie based on the popular life-simulation game series 'The Sims' is officially in the works, with production by Margot Robbie's company, known for also producing the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. The long-rumoured project is set for the big screen, as announced by Electronic Arts (EA) at its investor day event, as part of their plans to expand the popular Sims franchise. Details about the film are limited, and no release date has been announced yet. However, EA's Kate Gorman told Variety that the movie will be "very much rooted" in the game's universe, with plenty of Sims lore featured throughout. Amazon MGM Studios will be developing the film while Margot Robbie's company LuckyChap will produce it. Kate Herron, best known for the Marvel superhero television series 'Loki', will also direct and co-write the movie. "We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie is exactly what we want," said Gorman. The Sims video game series debuted in 2000 and originally emerged as a spin-off from the popular SimCity franchise, which debuted in 1989. While its predecessor had players building cities, 2000's The Sims shifted the focus to individual homes, letting players customise everything from furniture to the relationships of their virtual characters. The Sims and its three sequels have sold more than 200 million copies and is one of the best-selling video game series of all time. Electronic Arts is now also planning to release a multiplayer version of the game. The film is part of Hollywood's latest attempt to hop on the video game adaptation trend, fueled by the success of hits like Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog.
