Offcial recognition given to unique cloud formation during World Meteorological Day last Thursday

  GENEVA, Switzerland - There's a new kind of cloud and if you look at it, you'd think you're under a stormy sea because of its shape. The unique cloud formation has been given the name "asperitas", which is Latin for roughness, and its official recognition came on World Meteorological Day commemorated last Thursday. The latest edition of the International Cloud Atlas said asperitas is "characterized by localized waves in the cloud base, either smooth or dappled with smaller features, sometimes descending into sharp points, as if viewing a roughened sea surface from below." Adding a new cloud formation in the atlas published by the World Meteorological Organization is rare, according to a CNN report, as the group has not updated it in the past 30 years. It was in 2006 when a Britain-based group of weather enthusiasts called Cloud Appreciation Society received the first images of the distinctive cloud from Cedar Rapids in the US state of Iowa. A few years later, the British group proposed that the cloud be included in the atlas.
