Know someone who is in jail over unpaid debt? This charity can help
DUBAI - A UAE-based charity has helped free 7,800 prisoners by spending millions of dirhams to pay their debts and are looking to help thousands more with a planned crowd sourcing campaign.
More than 900 families of prisoners have also received support, said Major-General Dr Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, chairman of the board of Faraj Fund and Chairman of the Security, Justice and Safety Committee of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
Al Nuaimi said he got the idea of setting up the Faraj Fund after working as Secretary-General of the Office of Lt-General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
He came across inmates who could be freed if they were able to pay small fines or blood money. His first case was a Bangladeshi man who stayed in jail for not being able to pay blood money despite serving mandatory jail time.
Al Nuaimi said he signed a cheque to help the Bangladeshi.
He said that after getting Sheikh Saif's permission, he then set up the non-profit organisation, which was recognised by the then Ministry of Social Affairs in 2009.
Al Nuaimi said that fund is open to help people regardless of their nationality and that a committee in every prison studies the case of each prisoner.
A mobile app will soon be launched for crowd funding and allow people to donate as little as Dh10. The app will also include details and updates about each cases.
