Protest held as Philippines commemorates Bonifacio Day

  MANILA – Thousands of people gathered at the People Power Monument in White Plains EDSA highway in Quezon City on Wednesday (November 30) to protest the burial of deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes Cemetery). This was third protest action by anti-Marcos forces. Previous rallies held were at the People Power Monument last November 18 and at the Rizal Park last November 25. The protestors were mostly composed of young people who were not born long after Martial Law had been declared in the country in 1972 but are aware of the atrocities and anomalies that marked the Marcos regime. While organizers of the rally estimated the crowd at 30,000, the Quezon City police gave a much smaller figure – 3,000. Independent sources placed the crowd at 50,000. It was obvious though that the number of protestors in Wednesday's rally was bigger since it was non-working holiday as the country celebrated the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, a stalwart of the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish forces who occupied the country in the late 1800s. In the protest rally last November 18, police said the crowd numbered 3,000. The November 26 crowd was estimated by the police at 15,000. Wednesday's rally was also attended by defeated presidential candidate Manuel "Mar" Roxas III, opposition senator Leila de Lima and former senator Roberto Tanada, who urged the Duterte administration to retract its order allowing the interment of Marcos at the Libingan The protestors in Wednesday's rally criticized the burial of Marcos's remains at the Libingan as "an attempt by government to revise the country's history" to make it appear that the Marcos was a hero to Filipinos. President Rodrigo Duterte had promised the Marcos family during the campaign prior to the presidential elections last May to allow the late strongman's interment at the Libingan, raising a howl among anti-Marcos forces. When Duterte won, petitions against Marcos's burial at the Libingan were filed at the Supreme Court but the High Court ruled by a vote of 9-5 to allow the interment because Marcos possessed the qualifications to be buried there. Legal experts slammed the High Court magistrates who voted in favor Marcos's burial at the Libingan as resorting to a simplistic approach to a complicated issue, taking into account the human rights violations and corruption during the Marcos regime After the ruling, the Marcos family surreptitiously buried the dictator at the Libingan last November 18, the day when protests were going to be held, taking everyone by surprise because of the absence of any prior announcement and the secrecy surrounding the burial.
