More than two thousand residents participated on the first day of the ongoing initiative “From UAE With Love” to share a gift to underprivileged children in Syria and around the world.
An Emirati woman, who did not wish to be identified but came with a trolley filled with boxes of toys, told expatmedia.net that she was happy to "share a bit of joy to children who need happiness the most".
The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation on Saturday at City Centre Mirdif, runs until March 19. Gift boxes, which people can fill with children’s toys, can be collected or dropped off at the venue. The boxes will be distributed to underprivileged children in Syria through the UAE Red Crescent.
At Leaders Private School in Sharjah, more than 500 students donated boxes that they personalised with toys, letters of inspiration and caricatures.
“This shows how children in the UAE care for their neighbouring countries. I hope the condition of people will become better by this small help from us,” said Rafia Zafar Ali, the school principal.
Nord Anglia International School – Dubai (NAS Dubai) students and faculty also pledged more than 1,500 boxes. “As we begin to put the needs of others before ourselves we start to learn how much more we can achieve. This act of giving is witness to our commitment… for a world with no poverty,” said Mathew Farthing, NAS Dubai principal.
The boxes collected from the initiative will be distributed through the UAE-based Red Crescent in war-torn Syria.
“Through each box, many children around the world will find hope and happiness, and at the same time it will show the world the generous qualities of the people in the UAE,” said Suhail Albastaki, Happiness & Marketing Director of Union Coop.
Residents are encouraged to collect or drop off their boxes of care at the From UAE With Love platform in City Centre Mirdif’s Central Galleria where children can also take part in activities from 10am until 9pm.
"This gift giving initiative… inspires new means to spread the spirit of philanthropy while making donations easy and accessible. We are thrilled to play our part to distribute these much-needed gifts to the underprivileged children and brighten up their spirits. This is just one of the great ways of how we can support our communities." Maha Kanoo, Head of Marketing, Admin & HR at The Kanoo Group.
