Tiger cub on the loose in Dubai captured alive, police say

DUBAI – A tiger cub that was spotted on the loose in Dubai last week has been captured alive, while the man who bought the animal online will face trial, according to Dubai Police. A resident had spotted the animal and reported it to the police, who immediately went out to catch and rescue the cub. According to Dubai Police, the animal was ordered online by a resident who said he bought it after seeing an advertisement on social media. “He said it's his hobby to own exotic animals because he loves them,” said Colonel Khalfan Al Jallaf, director of the Environmental Crimes Division. Police did not give further details about the man’s identity, but said that his case has been referred to Dubai prosecution where he faces the charge of illegal possession of a wild animal. Under UAE law, illegal possession of wild or exotic animals is punishable with jail term of up to six months, and/or a fine of between Dh50,000 and Dh500,000. Meanwhile, police said that the tiger cub has been turned over to Dubai Safari where it will be rehabilitated. The animal is between four and six months old. Police said it is the eight exotic animal seized in Dubai since March. Among the animals seized by police were a small monkey, a wolf, a fox and a lion cub. Police urged the public to report incidents involving exotic animals by calling 999 or by sending an email to aecs@dubaipolice.gov.ae. ICA/Expat Media
