Tiny baby the size of a hand born in Abu Dhabi

  ABU DHABI – A baby believed to be one of the world’s tiniest has been born in Abu Dhabi and she’s so small she fits the palm of your hand, doctors said. The reason why baby Latifa is so small is because she was born after just 23 weeks of pregnancy. She was just 29m long and weighed 250 grams. When she was born with a lot of health conditions, her Emirati parents Ahmed Huseein Salem and Fatema Omar were told she “only had a few hours to live”. Latifa was born with respiratory distress, sepsis, anaemia, hypotension, abnormal coagulation, hypernatremia, hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia, renal failure, patent ductus arteriosus, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, gastroesophageal reflux, hearing issues and chronic lung disease, among many others. Baby Latifa beat the odds and survived. “She’s a miracle, that’s for sure,” said Dr. Ritu Nambiar, gynaecology specialist at NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi where Latifa spent 177 days in intensive care. After five months of treatment, baby Latifa grew stronger and was eventually discharged from the hospital. She weighed a healthy 3.82kg. “Latifa most likely survived and thrived as she did because she is a fighter and has a great family who stayed by her side, along with good genes and some good luck,” said Michael Davis, CEO of NMC Healthcare “A successful birth of 250g is extremely rare. Latifa had to deal with the usual catastrophic issues that can set a baby back or lead to death.
