Work from home: tips to cut screen time

Have you ever normalized limiting screen time even when working from home? Taking breaks from technology will save and maintain your energy says time management coach and the founder of Real Life E Time Coaching & Speaking, Elizabeth Grace Sauders. She is the author of How to Invest Your Time Like Money and Divine Time Management. According to Sauders, even when the video chat apps and other technology connect us as we work remotely, they can also cause mental, emotional, and muscle fatigue to your workday. Finding ways to proactively disconnect from a screen throughout the day can help maintain and regain energy. You probably thought you spent practically all of your workday at the computer before the quarantine. You had no idea, though, that you could spend a lot more. Between commutes, formal meetings, drive-by discussions, watercooler chats, coffee breaks, and lunches, you had plenty of opportunities to take a break from your device and disconnect from the digital world. Now that those natural breaks are gone, there's little to no time to disconnect from electronics. Video calls, in particular, bring an extra layer of exhaustion. Having to focus on numerous faces at the same time while also being aware that everyone can see you add an extra element of mental and emotional stress that you wouldn't get in a face-to-face environment. Sauders have worked on five tips in reducing screen time while working from home which has helped her clients in maintaining to eliminate technology within a day. These strategies have been most effective according to the time management coach.

Don’t default to Zoom

If a phone call will suffice for a talk, go ahead and do so. If you can explain what you need more effectively by email or by updating a shared document or task management system, do so. You don't have to use video just because you can.

Limit your meeting time

However, if virtual meetings tire you, this practice is even more important right now. Schedule time where you are not available for meetings so that you can limit the amount of virtual communication you receive each day.

Choose physical over digital

Look for low-tech alternatives to offset the increased time spent in front of a screen both at work and at home. Do you have an idea for a story? On a piece of paper, write down your ideas.

Move as much as possible

Move around as much as you can to combat the tiredness created by sitting constantly in front of your computer. Take a visit to the kitchen to refill your water or coffee in between meetings. When you need a little break, try a few easy movements to get your circulation circulating, such as rotating your shoulders.

Take tech-free breaks

Taking a break from technology not only provides your brain a rest but also gives you perspective. Although eating lunch at your computer may seem more "efficient," your brain will thank you for taking a break from it. Sauders advises her clients to have time to separate themselves from the digital world. It will be a huge comfort to be able to return to more face-to-face communication. However, some of the additional digital burdens are unavoidable in the short run. These tactics can assist you in reducing digital tiredness and counteracting the load. KMB/ Expat Media
