Marathoner Mary Joy Tabal makes appeal before she left for Italy to train for 2 months

  MANILA – Mary Joy Tabal has formally asked the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) to include her in the contingent that will compete in the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Kuala Lumpur this August. This, as she left for Italy for a two-month training even if the reason she has been dropped from the national pool is because of her refusal to join the Philippine team in its training in the country. She trains on her own through a corporate sponsor and has her own coach. Tabal, who competed in last year's Rio Games, wrote a letter to PTAFA head Philip Ella Juico to reinstate her in the national pool. The PATAFA removed Tabal from its roster for allegedly causing divisiveness and disruption in the federation. Tabal told Spin.ph in an online interview that she will wait for Juico's response and take it from there. She also said she does not know what rules of the PATAFA did she violate. "I am actually very sad of what I heard upon my arrival and I didn't expect it to happen. I didn't know what rules I did not follow or violated. I am just doing my best for the training. I was too focused on the training that will help me become better and ready for the upcoming SEA Games," Tabal said. Tabal's camp said she should be included in the SEAG contingent, especially after she won a half-marathon event in Ottawa, Canada recently. Prior to the Rio Games last year, Tabal qualified for the Olympics even if she was not a member of the national pool and the PATAFA decided to accredit her so she could compete in Brazil.
