Residents told to stay home unless there is an emergency that they need to go out

  MUMBAI – Nearly 300mm of rain – 10 times more than normal - inundated parts of Mumbai on Tuesday as weather forecasters warned of more rain to come today although it would less intense. Officials said five people died in Mumbai and in Thane in incidents related to the heavy and incessant downpour. On Twitter, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told Mumbai residents "to stay home unless there is an emergency" that would force them to go out. Fadnavis also said "essential services" will still be up and running amid the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, expressed concern for the people in Mumbai and urged them in a tweet to "stay safe". Floodwaters were waist-high in many places and traffic was congested all over the city, prompting motorists to abandon their cars. Schools and colleges were closed. The incessant rain caused flights at the airport to be either delayed or diverted while train trips were late or stopped completely. The meteorological agency said Tuesday's rain was the heaviest since July 2005. There will be more rain today but it won't be as intense, the agency added. PTI news agency said three people, including two children, were killed when their rain-drenched house in Mumbai collapsed while in Thane, a woman and a teenaged girl died. Two other people were hurt in rain-related incidents. Meanwhile, teams from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on alert and the Navy has kept divers and choppers on standby to rescue people.
