The UAE has rolled out a tougher Federal Traffic Law that imposes jail time and heavy fines on motorists convicted of serious driving offences. Under the new law, drivers can face up to three years of licence suspension for traffic crimes such as reckless driving, DUI, or endangering lives. Those caught driving during a suspension period could face up to three months in jail, a Dh10,000 fine, or both. The law, now in effect, gives courts the power to: • Suspend an existing driving licence for up to three years • Deny licence renewal for up to two years after suspension • Prohibit unlicensed drivers from obtaining a new licence for up to three years During suspension, licences are invalid, and any new ones obtained are void. Drivers may, however, appeal to lift the restriction six months after conviction. The updated rules also authorize officers to arrest drivers who cause fatalities or serious injuries, damage property, flee accident scenes, drive under the influence, or refuse to provide identification. Authorities say the new framework underscores the UAE’s “zero tolerance” approach to reckless driving and aims to make roads safer for all. ICA/Expat Media
