Recall of vehicles is due to potentially faulty airbag inflators made by Takata

  DUBAI - Car manufacturer Toyota Motor Inc. has recalled 2.9 million cars in Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and other regions over potentially defective airbag inflators that can explode under hot conditions. Included in the recall are Toyota's Corolla Axio sedan and RAV4 sports utility vehicle (SUV). The withdrawal of the 2.9 million vehicles is part of 100 million cars recalled from the market, the automobile industry's biggest ever, that was prompted by 16 deaths in the US linked to exploding airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. A Reuters report said aside from Toyota, Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, Mitsubishi Motors Corp and truck maker Hino Motors (7205.T) also recalled a total of 240,000 vehicles in the domestic market over Takata inflators. Of the 2.9 million Toyota cars taken off the market, recalls were issued for about 1.16 million vehicles sold in Oceania, the Middle East and Toyota's smaller markets, nearly one-third of total, while about 750,000 vehicles had been recalled in Japan. In the Middle East, Al Futtaim Motors issued a statement about the recall, saying: "We have started a special service campaign on additional 39,294 vehicles in the UAE, including Corolla MY 2010 to 2013, Yaris MY 2012 and Alphard MY 2011 and 2013. The involved vehicles are equipped with Takata-produced front driver and/or passenger airbag inflators which contain propellants that could degrade after prolonged exposure to humidity and high temperatures." "These propellants could cause the inflators to rupture and the airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of an accident," Al Futtaim also said. Meanwhile, Takata is reportedly seeking a financial sponsor to help pay for the costs that the company will incur because of the recalls.
