Victory marred by criticism that transgender boy had undue advantage of female opponents

  CYPRESS, Texas – Seventeen-year-old transgender boy Mack Beggs won the state girls' wrestling title amid criticism that he has an unfair advantage over his opponents considering the testosterone he takes as he transitions from female to male. Beggs, who is from Euless, Trinity, finished the state's wrestling season with 56 wins and no losses in the 110-pound weight category after defeating Chelsea Sanchez, 12-2. Beggs's family had said that Mack would prefer to wrestle boys but state policy states calls for students to fight against the gender listed in their birth certificate. Deputy director Jamey Harrison of the University Interscholastic League, which oversees athletics in Texas public schools, said they had not received a request to change divisions from any athlete at this competition. It was the UIL that made the state policy in August last year. An ESPN report said Beggs fell on his knees after being declared the winner amid applause and boos from the audience then went on to hug his coach and left the mat. The boos didn't dampen Beggs' happiness as he led the five other top finishers in doing the dab as they posed for pictures on the medal stand. Beggs had been dogged by questions during the wrestling season about whether his testosterone he takes makes him too strong to wrestle fairly against girls. But Harrison believes that the outcome of the tournament was fair. "Nothing that has happened at this year's wrestling championships has the UIL reconsidering its rules, because quite frankly, we don't believe that any issues being reported on are really a product of UIL rules," he said.
