First American astronaut John Glenn dies in Ohio hospital at the age of 95

  OHIO - John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit the earth and a member of the US Senate for almost a quarter of a century, died Thursday in an Ohio hospital. But Ohio State University Hospital spokesman Hank Wilson did not disclose what the 95-year-old Glenn succumb to. Previously though, Glenn underwent heart surgery. US President Barack Obama, who he described as a close of his and of First Lady Michelle Obama, mourned Glenn's death. "With John's passing, our nation has lost an icon and Michelle and I have lost a friend. John spent his life breaking barriers, from defending our freedom as a decorated Marine Corps fighter pilot in World War II and Korea, to setting a transcontinental speed record, to becoming, at age 77, the oldest human to touch the stars. John always had the right stuff, inspiring generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts who will take us to Mars and beyond—not just to visit, but to stay. The last of America's first astronauts has left us, but propelled by their example we know that our future here on Earth compels us to keep reaching for the heavens," the Obamas said in a statement. Glenn's former colleagues at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also paid tribute to Glenn. According to a biography, Glenn made history in 1962 by becoming the first American astronaut to do an orbital flight around the earth in the Friendship 7 space capsule. He went on to become a US senator and served in the Senate for almost 25 years. In 1998, he returned to space at age 77, the oldest person to do so.
