Typhoon Gaemi battered Manila on Wednesday (July 24), leading to a state of calamity as heavy rain caused severe flooding and a rising death toll, authorities said. According to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the death toll from the Category 4 storm rose to 12 on Wednesday. Several individuals were still missing. The Metro Manila Council and the Department of the Interior and Local Government have officially declared a state of calamity in Metro Manila.

Flooding and evacuations

Thousands of residents from low-lying areas were evacuated as water levels rose, submerging major roads and causing power outages. Emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped in their homes. Homes, infrastructure, and businesses suffered extensive damage, with the full extent of the destruction still being assessed. Philippine Red Cross teams waded through floods to rescue residents, including children and pregnant women, who fled their homes in Mandaluyong and Valuenzuela city following heavy rainfall due to the typhoon.

Flights and transportation

All domestic and international flights were suspended as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) faced operational challenges due to flooding. Public transportation services were halted, stranding commuters and adding to the chaos. The Philippine coastguard said 354 passengers and 31 vessels were stranded in ports while airlines cancelled 13 flights on Wednesday, Manila's airport authority said.

Classes, work and the stock market

The presidential office suspended classes at all academic levels and work in most government offices in the capital region. Private businesses were closed as a precautionary measure. Many companies have advised employees to work from home where possible, prioritizing safety. The Philippine Stock Exchange suspended trading due to the severe weather conditions, impacting the financial market. Investors are bracing for potential economic repercussions as the city recovers. The government and relief organizations are coordinating efforts to distribute essential supplies such as food, water, and medical aid. Shelters have been established for displaced residents, and cleanup operations are in full swing to restore essential services.
