Typhoon spoils Christmas celebrations in the Philippines, thousands left homeless as severe storm slams through 2 regions

  MANILA - Thousands of people had to forego their Christmas celebrations and spend it in cramped evacuation centers as Typhoon Nina (international codename Nock-Ten) slammed through two populous regions in the country on Christmas Day and Monday. At least four people were killed in Bicol region but an Associated Press report said Nina killed six people. Between 380,000 and 400,000 people in heavily-populated Bicol and Southern Luzon regions, the hardest hit by the typhoon, had to stay in public school buildings converted into evacuation centers. Nina cut electricity in five provinces and prompted the cancellation of more than 300 domestic and international flights to and from Manila while cargo and passenger vessels were prevented from leaving various ports leaving at least 12,000 people stranded and forced to spend Christmas in the piers. Four people were killed in Bicol region but according to reports there were six who died either by after being pinned down by felled trees or concrete walls that toppled. Military camps and outposts were also damaged in Bicol region resulting in injuries to some troops. As the typhoon blew across Southern Luzon, a cargo ship with two dozen crewmen radioed for help after being swamped by huge waves spawned by Nina. The ship ran aground near the coastal town of Mabini in Batangas province and capsized. The crewmen however were saved. In Metro Manila, Nina's strong winds and rains buffeted the Philippine capital cutting power and caused flooding in some areas. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Nina's eye first made landfall in Bato, Catanduanes Sunday night and at the time, the storm had 185 kph-winds and gustiness of 215 kph. It weakened as the storm made landfall seven other times in Bicol and Southern Luzon before it exited the Luzon landmass and went out to the West Philippine Sea on late Monday afternoon. Relief operations are ongoing in the regions affected by Nina and evacuees are being taken care of by the government's social welfare department. On Facebook, Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Judy Taguiwalo on Tuesday (December 27) called for volunteers to help in the repacking of relief goods.
