The UAE on Monday (December 18) observed the last day of a three-day mourning period over the death of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah. Flags continued to fly at half-mast while TV and radio stations in the UAE ran programming with Quranic verses or subdued music in respect to the late Sheikh Nawaf, who died at the age of 86. Authorities did not give the cause of death. On Saturday (December 16), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared a three-day national mourning period over the death of Sheikh Nawaf. Sheikh Nawaf was born in 1937 to the ruling Al Sabah family. He was the fifth son of Kuwait's late ruler Sheikh Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah. Sheikh Nawaf was only 25 when he started his political career as a governor of Hawalli province. He kept the post until 1978, when he was appointed Interior Minister of Kuwait. Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in as Emir of Kuwait in 2020 following the death of his brother Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the fourth son of Sheikh Ahmed. Sheikh Nawaf is succeeded by his brother and crown prince Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber, who has been named the new Emir at the age of 83. ICA/Expat Media
