Starting on July 1, some UAE federal government employees will be eligible for a four-day work week under the country’s new flexible working rules. According to the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources on Thursday (June 8), government employees must work 40 hours per week or no more than 10 hours per day in order to be eligible for a 4-day work week. The authority said that the shortened work week would require the approval of the employer and would be granted only in “exceptional cases”. "The system is allowed to be applied in exceptional cases in accordance with the regulations specified in the human resources manuals, and it is only done with the approval of the head of the entity, and it is within a specific and short period of time," the authority said. So far, only Sharjah moved to a four-day work week at the start of 2022, while also adhering to the new Saturday-Sunday weekend adopted in the UAE. The rest of the country moved to a 4 ½ day week for government employees in 2022, with staff working full-time from Monday to Thursday and half day on Friday. ICA/Expat Media
