The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court has adjourned the hearing of 84 accused of creating a secret terrorist group known as Justice and Dignity Committee in the UAE. The hearing has been adjourned to April 18 in order to complete hearing the pleas of the 84 defendants. They are charged with planning terrorist acts, terrorist funding and concealing the source and destination of the funds. In the hearing this week, the court heard over three and a half hours of defence arguments where the defendants lawyers challenged the validity of the charges and demanded the acquittal and release of the group. They claimed that the defendants were unaware of the organisation’s terrorist nature. The defence lawyers also argued that the court lacked jurisdiction due to a prior judgment in a previous case, a defence strategy that all defendants endorsed. The Public Prosecution, meanwhile, cited specific rulings from the Federal Supreme Court addressing the lawyers’ claim of lack of jurisprudence.
