UAE aims to make more rain, says top meteorologist
DUBAI – Despite record rainfall last week and wet weather forecast this week, a top meteorologist said that the UAE is looking for more ways to increase rainfall. Dr Omar Al Yazeedi, National Centre of Meteorology director, said that although cloud seeding has been effectively used in the UAE, the weather bureau is researching for new ways to generate rainfall. Speaking at the International Rain Enhancement Forum in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (January 19), Al Yazeedi said experts are considering using solar energy to create artificial clouds to help boost cloud seeding. “Making our own clouds could be a possibility in the future. Eventually, the aim is to make more clouds and more rain,” he said. The meteorologist said that a boost in rainfall is critical to fight drought brought by climate change. Last year, the NCM carried out 247 cloud seeding operations in the UAE. This year, 17 cloud seeding operations have been recorded so far.
