The UAE has conveyed its commitment to enable environmental activists to openly voice their opinions and assemble during the UN climate negotiations. This assurance was articulated via a joint statement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) released on Tuesday (August 1). Based on the guidelines established by the UNFCCC and international human rights standards, climate activists will have the opportunity to gather peacefully and express their concerns during the upcoming COP28 in Dubai. The joint statement follows a signed bilateral agreement between Simon Stiell, UNFCCC Chief, and Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President, establishing the legal framework for hosting the climate talks. Stiell reaffirms dedication to upholding UN values at COPs for driving climate action and ambition. Inclusive participation is prioritized in the COP process for youth, women, local communities, Indigenous Peoples and those impacted by climate change. JAC/Expat Media
