UAE residents who were stranded overseas and whose residency visas expired while they were abroad can return to the country without applying for a new entry visa, authorities said on Thursday (March 12). The decision was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, which said the move is meant to help residents affected by airspace closures and flight disruptions across the region. According to the authority, the temporary measure took effect on February 28 and will remain valid until March 31. The policy applies to UAE residents who were outside the country and whose residency permits expired on or after February 28 while they were abroad. It specifically covers individuals who were unable to return to the UAE because of airspace closures or suspended flights. Under the decision, eligible residents can enter the UAE during the validity period without needing to apply for a new entry visa. This also allows them to regularise their residency status after arrival without facing financial penalties resulting from the exceptional travel disruptions. The authority said the move was introduced in response to extraordinary circumstances affecting residents who could not travel back in time to renew their residency permits. It added that the decision reflects the UAE’s humanitarian approach in responding to emergencies and easing the burden on residents affected by travel disruptions. Officials also said the measure aims to help reunite families in the UAE. According to the authority, the policy allows heads of households or family members whose residency permits expired while abroad to return to the country and resume their lives with their families. The step aligns with the UAE’s “Year of the Family” initiative. Authorities said emergency response and business continuity plans are currently being implemented across airports and operational facilities in the UAE to ensure smooth procedures for travellers. These measures also help address issues related to flight delays or rescheduling while providing support to residents affected by travel disruptions. The authority urged residents concerned by the decision to follow official channels for updates and regulatory announcements related to the situation. Officials said the UAE remains committed to maintaining high levels of readiness and ensuring continuous services for travellers and residents during exceptional circumstances.
