The country ranked ninth in the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index

DUBAI - The UAE placed ninth among the world's top 10 most charitable countries, according to the 2017 Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index. Myanmar topped the list that ranked 139 countries based on three behaviors, namely, helping a stranger, donating money, and doing volunteer work. CAF chief executive John Low said: "The questions that make up the Index focus on – do we give money or time or do we help strangers in need?" It confounds traditional views of the link between wealth and generosity, confirming what we all surely know: that giving is about spirit and inner motivation, not about financial means," he also said. The UAE had an index score of 51 percent. The index showed that 71 percent of the populace in the UAE helped a stranger while 55 percent donated money. Twenty-seven percent of the people in the country did volunteer work. Myanmar had a score of 65 percent. Ninety-one percent of the population of the Southeast Asian country donated money; 53 percent had helped a stranger; and 51 percent did volunteer work. Indonesia and Kenya placed second and third to Myanmar, respectively, in the index. New Zealand came in fourth with an index score of 57 percent and the US was fifth with 56 percent as score. Meanwhile, the CAF report showed that Bangladesh had the biggest decrease in score – from 56 percent in 2016 to 34 percent this year. Vietnam was close behind with a decrease from 55 percent in 2016 to 37 percent this year.
