UAE announces up to Dh500,000 fine for insulting, defaming people on social media
The Sharjah Police (SP) Criminal Investigation Department has warned residents against using social networking sites for insults and defamation. Colonel Omar Ahmed Abu Al Zawd, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police (SP), emphasized the importance of constructive and appropriate community interaction through social networking platforms. He stressed that the police take harsh measures against persons abusing others. Using information technology, the Criminal Investigation Department handled 85 insults and six defamation reports last year, implementing all legal measures against these reports. Under Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes, anyone who insults others while using information technology means faces imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh250,000 and not more than Dh500,000 or one of these two penalties.
