Private sector employees in the UAE will get a paid public holiday on Sunday (July 7), the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation announced on Tuesday (July 2). The public holiday is to mark Islamic New Year, which indicates the beginning of Muharram or the first of 12 months on the Islamic calendar.

What if you are required to work on a public holiday?

Under UAE law, if an employee is required to work during holidays or leaves, he or she will be compensated with another rest day or will be paid an equivalent of a regular day's salary with the addition of at least 50 percent of his or her basic daily wage. ICA/Expat Media
