UAE approves International Red Cross office in Abu Dhabi

The UAE Cabinet authorized an agreement permitting the International Committee of the Red Cross to open an office in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid announced the decision and several other matters in a tweet. The deal between the UAE and the aid group was initially signed in July. In an official statement, the ICRC's head of mission in the UAE, Clare Dalton, expressed her organization's joy after formalizing ties with the UAE. She explained that "the agreement, which ensures our legal status in the UAE, defines the framework of our relations, and paves the way for further co-operation and dialogue with the authorities." The Geneva-based agency already has a presence in Dubai at International Humanitarian City. Dalton noted that "the UAE has provided the ideal location to discuss innovation in humanitarian action, and the country will host the ICRC's first Water and Energy Hub currently set up in the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park."
