Why UAE banned eggs, chickens from Saudi Arabia

  DUBAI - The UAE has banned imports of all kinds of chicken and egg products from Saudi Arabia after the H5N8 bird flu was detected in Riyadh. In an announcement, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (Moccae) said the ban applies on all kinds of domestic, wild or ornamental birds, chicks, poultry meat, eggs and egg-based products that are not thermally treated. The ministry said it imposed the ban after receiving a notice from the World Organisation of Animal Health, which said that the H5N8 strain infected and killed 14 birds in Riyadh. At least 60,000 birds exposed to the virus were culled. There have been no reported cases of human infection of the H5N8 strain, according to World Health Organisation (WHO). The organisation said the risk of human infection from the bird flu strain is low. "Moccae is carefully scrutinizing documentation accompanying consignments (certificate of origin, health certificate and halal certifications, among others) of food products shipped into the country," the ministry said. Saudi Arabia earlier this year imposed restrictions on poultry imports from countries such as Bulgaria, in an effort to prevent the disease spreading, according to the ministry.
