UAE bans chicken, eggs from Russia

DUBAI - The UAE has banned the import of eggs, chicken and its meat products from Russia. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said that it is a precautionary measure following the outbreak of H5N2, a strain of bird flu, at a farm in Russia's central region that led to the death of more than 660,000 birds. Th ministry said the ban also includes import of all species of domestic and wild live birds, ornamental birds, chicks and non-heat-treated wastes. Only thermally-treated poultry meat and eggs are cleared for import from other parts of Russia. In December, the UAE also banned the importation of all kinds of chicken and egg products from Saudi Arabia after the H5N8 bird flu was detected in Riyadh. The ministry said it imposed the ban after receiving a notice from the World Organisation of Animal Health, which said that the H5N8 strain infected and killed 14 birds in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia earlier this year imposed restrictions on poultry imports from countries such as Bulgaria, in an effort to prevent the disease spreading, according to the ministry.
