UAE bans poultry import from 2 countries after bird flu outbreak

DUBAI – The UAE has banned the import of domestic and wild birds, including poultry products from Hungary and Slovakia following an outbreak of bird flu there. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment imposed the immediate ban to prevent the spread of H5N2 virus. The import ban covers all species of domestic and wild live birds, pet birds, chicks, hatching eggs, meat and meat products from Hungary and Slovakia. The ministry said that only heat-treated meat and eggs will be allowed into the UAE “These measures will enhance bio-security levels and eliminate pathogens before they enter the country,” said Kaltham Kayaf, acting director of the ministry’s animal development and health department. The H5N2 bird flu virus can easily infect birds. In humans, the virus cause respiratory problems, fever, headache, muscle ache, runny nose and weakness. Symptoms generally appear within 10 days.
