Film adaption of Hindu epic will be Bollywood's biggest, most expensive movie

  DUBAI - UAE-based Indian billionaire Dr. B. R. Shetty will fund a two-part movie adaptation of the Hindu epic "The Mahabharata". Shetty, founder of UAE Exchange and NMC Healthcare, will invest 1,000 crore (US$150 million or Dh550.8 million) for the movie, which will be helmed by V.A. Shrikumar. The film adaption of the Hindu epic is expected to become Bollywood's biggest, most expensive movie. "This movie will be a true Make in India, made for the world. The Mahabharata mesmerises as well as brings focus on life and living," Shetty told The Hindu BusinessLine. "I believe that this film will not only set global benchmarks, but also reposition India and its prowess in mythological storytelling. I am confident that this film will be adapted in over 100 languages and reach over 3 billion people across the world," Shetty also said. Shrikumar, for his part, said: "I would like to sincerely thank Shetty for having immense faith in this project and help bring it to life with his financial commitment and his innate pride in Indian heritage. We are fully geared to attain the next level of production quality and visual magic, as well as narrative wizardry with this initiative." Production of "The Mahabharata" will start in September 2018. The first part of the movie will be released in early 2020 while the second part will hit theaters within 90 days after the first part is shown. As planned, "The Mahabharata" will primarily be in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu and will be dubbed in major Indian and foreign languages. The technical crew will have "great names in world cinema including some Academy Award winners" while the cast will be selected by an "internationally renowned casting director". M T Vasudevan Nair, author of the Jnanpeeth award-winning novel Randamoozham (The Second Turn) – on which the movie will be based- will be the screenwriter.
