The Ministry of Defense confirmed on Saturday afternoon (February 28) that UAE air defence systems successfully intercepted a new wave of Iranian missiles launched toward the country. According to the Ministry, “the threat was handled with high efficiency, resulting in no damage.” Photos of intercepted missiles were released following the operation. Debris from the intercepted missiles fell across several areas of Abu Dhabi, including Al Falah, Beni Yas, Khalifa City, Mohamed Bin Zayed City, Saadiyat Island and the St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in the mentioned locations. Earlier in the day, the Ministry said the UAE had been subjected to what it described as a “blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles.” The Ministry confirmed that the missiles were also successfully intercepted. During that earlier incident, falling debris in a residential area caused material damage and the death of one civilian of Asian nationality. Officials said the country’s overall security situation remains stable. The Ministry affirmed that it remains in a high state of readiness and full preparedness to address any threats. It stressed that targeting the country constitutes a violation of national sovereignty and international law, adding that the UAE reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its territory and ensure national security. Authorities also urged the public to obtain information exclusively from official sources and refrain from circulating rumours or unverified reports.

NCEMA to public: don't touch debris

The National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) called on residents to stay away from areas where debris or suspicious objects may have fallen. Citizens were advised not to approach, touch or photograph such objects to allow specialised teams to carry out safety procedures. “We reassure everyone that the situation is currently under control. The competent authorities are closely and continuously monitoring the situation at all times and around the clock, and all necessary precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of everyone,” the Authority stated. NCEMA said the UAE operates under an integrated national crisis response framework supported by advanced operational expertise. It added that relevant authorities are coordinating closely and will keep the public informed of any updates that require announcement. The Ministry of Interior said it is closely monitoring regional developments and remains at the highest level of readiness in coordination with relevant entities. Public safety and security remain its top priority, the Ministry said.

Airspace closures and flight suspensions

Amid escalating regional tensions following Israel’s announcement that it launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran, aviation authorities across the region implemented precautionary measures. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced a temporary partial closure of UAE airspace as a precaution to ensure the safety of flights and aircrews. The Authority said the decision followed a comprehensive security and operational risk assessment conducted in coordination with national and international partners. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for the latest updates. The GCAA said airlines will provide accommodation and necessary assistance in coordination with local authorities. Dubai Airports announced that all flights at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC) are suspended until further notice. Emirates temporarily suspended operations to and from Dubai due to multiple regional airspace closures. The airline urged passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport. Sharjah Airport issued an advisory on cancellations and delays, urging travellers to stay updated with their airlines. Regionally, Air India suspended all flights to destinations in the Middle East. In a statement posted on X, the airline said: “In view of the developing situation in parts of the Middle East, all Air India flights to all destinations in the Middle East have been suspended.” The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announced a temporary suspension of all air traffic in Qatar, while the Kuwaiti Public Authority for Civil Aviation confirmed the closure of Kuwaiti airspace as a precautionary step. Spokesman Abdullah Al-Rajhi told the Kuwait News Agency that the move was aimed at preserving the safety and security of passengers and airline operations at Kuwait International Airport.
