The UAE Council for Fatwa has called on residents to observe the sky on the evening of Saturday (March 29), for the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon, which will determine the start of Eid Al Fitr. Eid Al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. If the moon is spotted on March 29, Eid celebrations will begin on Sunday, March 30, resulting in a four-day public holiday until Tuesday, April 2. However, if Ramadan extends to 30 days, Eid will start on Monday, March 31, extending the holiday break until Wednesday, April 3. The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has confirmed that public sector employees will receive at least three days off, with a possible fourth day off if Ramadan extends. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has also announced a paid holiday for private sector workers from March 30 to April 1. The holiday could extend to Wednesday, April 2, if Ramadan lasts 30 days instead of 29, according to MOHRE. According to astronomical predictions, Shawwal is expected to begin on March 31, but the official start will be based on the moon sighting committee’s confirmation. ICA/Expat Media
