UAE car sellers see low sales in 2017; glut in unsold new vehicles cited among factors for projection

  ABU DHABI - Data on the automobile industry in the UAE has revealed that new car sales in the country have gone down by nearly 30 percent on last year and recovery is not expected until the end of 2017. This, as car sellers in the emirates see slower sales in 2017 because of the economic downturn, layoffs and a glut in unsold new cars. "Car dealers will have to get used to this level of sales. Everything changes from here because as the oil price receded, confidence dropped and people are concerned over job security," said Bill Carter, head of valuation and product manager at Autodata Middle East, a data provider for the automobile industry. Alpen Capital, a Dubai-based investment bank, for its part, said in a report the imposition of value-added tax starting in 2018 has dampened car sales. On the other hand, K Rajaram, chief executive officer of Al Nabooda Automobiles, said recovery in car sales is expected by the fourth quarter, if oil prices stabilise. According to the Alpen Capital report, the number of passenger cars in use in the emirates is projected to be at 5.3 per cent a year to reach 2.5 million in 2020, compared to two million last year while new car sales are expected to grow at a yearly rate of 4.5 percent a year to reach more than 267,000 in 2020.
