UAE names first astronaut to spend six months on International Space Station

The UAE has chosen Emirati engineer Sultan Al Neyadi as its first astronaut to spend six months on the International Space Station in 2023. Al Nayadi has spent the last four years in training for the mission. He will board the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Florida’s Kennedy Space Centre next year, making the UAE the 11th country to conduct a long-duration astronaut mission. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan congratulated Al Neyadi for being selected in the historic space mission. “I am proud to congratulate Sultan Al Neyadi on being selected as the first Arab astronaut to spend 6 months on the International Space Station as part of a mission to commence in 2023,” Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said. The 41-year-old Al Neyadi will serve as mission specialist on the Nasa-SpaceX Crew 6 mission. The mission includes Nasa astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Al Neyadi served as a network security engineer in the UAE Armed Forces before joining the UAE’s space team. He has a PhD in Information Technology from Australia’s Griffith University. He also holds a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Brighton in England. He has five children and he grew up in Al Ain. ICA/Expat Media
