UAE condemns extremists for burning copies of holy Quran in Sweden

DUBAI – The UAE summoned the ambassador of Sweden to the UAE on Tuesday (April 19) to protest against the burning of copies of the holy Quran by extremists in Sweden. Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, summoned Ambassador of Sweden to the UAE, Liselott Andersson. Al Hashemy affirmed the UAE's rejection of all practices that offend religions, stressing the need to "respect religious symbols and avoid incitement and polarisation". The UAE minister emphasized that such practices “only lead to more tension and confrontation at a time when the world needs to work together to spread the values of tolerance and coexistence and reject hatred and extremism”. According to reports, extremists in Sweden burned copies of the holy Quran during a far-right anti-Muslim rally. Violence erupted in Sweden during the weekend as clashes broke out between police and protesters rallying against plans by a far-right group to burn copies of the Quran. More than 40 people have been arrested. The violence was sparked by a series of rallies organised by Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan, who said he has burned a copy of the holy book and wants to do so again. In the UAE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stated that it rejects all actions undermining security and contradicting moral principles. The ministry reiterated its long-standing call to reject hate and avoid encouraging hatred by disparaging religions. MoFAIC also emphasized the importance of spreading the ideals of tolerance and coexistence. The Diplomatic Advisor to the UAE President, Dr. Anwar Gargash, said in a tweet that the UAE chose to follow the path of tolerance and reflects positively on its multicultural society.
