UAE converts wastewater to irrigate farms, forests
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) converts wastewater to provide treated irrigation water to 4,015 agricultural farms and 32 forest areas in the Al Ain region. EAD said the farms will be receiving 250,000 cubic meters of treated wastewater per day as part of its 2021-2025 strategic plan. EAD will also launch a program for small desalination plants on 1,200 farms. According to EAD, agricultural progress reached 6.3 percent annually for 33 years. It led to unsustainable farming practices, such as overgrazing, soil pollution, and secondary soil salinization. Adopting policies and regulations to preserve the soil from further deterioration and pollution is one of EAD's sustainability plans. The agency will also create a regulatory framework for trash disposal, design a licensing strategy for waste hauling vehicles, and ensure its execution focusing on litter reduction. UAE also plans to impose further legislative actions to restrict development in essential natural habitats and preserve wildlife.
