UAE: Court dismisses case of a man demanding Dh150,000 compensation from a shop owner who accused him of theft
After being wrongly accused of stealing a musical instrument from his shop, an Abu Dhabi resident sued a man for Dh150,000. According to court documents, the accused sought Dh150,000 for psychological and moral harm caused by the accusation. He claimed it harmed his reputation. The individual claimed in his case that the store owner filed a complaint against him, accusing him of stealing a lute from his shop. He went to the shop to get his lute fixed and had previously purchased the instrument from the same shop. The individual stated that he paid Dh5,830 for the instrument via bank transfer. Due to a lack of evidence, the court absolved the man of all accusations. The accused subsequently took the store owner to Al Dhafra Civil Court of First Instance and requested civil compensation for causing harm to his reputation. The judge, however, dismissed the case saying that the store owner had a legal right to file a complaint against him if he suspected the man of stealing the musical instrument.
