UAE: Court fines man for each for insulting his wife
The Ras Al Khaimah Court of First Instance acquits a woman of insulting her husband after a flash memory and WhatsApp audio communications established the husband's guilt after each alleged that the other person had insulted the other. The court acquitted the woman owing to a lack of conclusive evidence and fined the husband Dh5,000 in absentia after the wife added to her case audio recordings of her husband criticizing her and accusing her of using derogatory language. The wife went to the Public Prosecution with a flash drive containing seven audio files to indicate that her husband had insulted her. Before the prosecution, the husband said he did not mean to disrespect his wife but rather to let her know that what she was doing was irresponsible. He also claimed that she was acting up, alleging that she smoked the electronic hookah in front of children and that when he asked her to stop, she refused and demanded a divorce. The husband admitted that all of the audio recordings connected to the case file belonged to him, but he failed to present compelling evidence that his wife had insulted him. The wife told the police that if they had a disagreement, her husband would leave the house and send her voice messages via WhatsApp, including insults.
