A grocery delivery rider in the UAE has been awarded Dh5 million in compensation after a car accident left him paralyzed. The landmark ruling came after Shifin Ummer Kummali, 22, was struck by a car while making a delivery in Al Ain in 2022, leaving him completely paralyzed. The court’s ruling followed an intensive year-long legal process, during which Shifin’s lawyers successfully argued for an increase in compensation to cover his ongoing medical needs. Originally, the court awarded Dh2.8 million, but the sum was raised to Dh5 million after taking into account the severity of his injuries and his family's financial struggles. Shifin’s father, who left his job in Saudi Arabia to care for his son full-time, was present to receive the compensation in Dubai. "The amount will help us provide ongoing care for Shifin and give him the best possible chance of recovery," he said, adding that Shifin had already shown small improvements through therapy. The compensation was paid by the insurance company of the driver who fled the scene. While the driver received a fine, Shifin’s lawyer stressed that the delivery rider's insurance played a critical role in securing the payout. Shifin’s family, now back in India, are hopeful the money will enable them to explore further medical treatments abroad, with dreams of restoring his ability to perform basic tasks and possibly even speak again.
