UAE diabetes challenge: Participants win up to Dh20,000 for making lifestyle changes
Participants in the first diabetes challenge in the UAE launched on Thursday would be eligible to earn cash prizes of up to Dh5,000 for adopting healthier lifestyles. The challenge, initiated by RAK Hospital in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Prevention, aims to lower the biomarkers of the disease, including the levels of HbA1c and BMI, among people with diabetes — "thus lessening the risk of associated complications." In the 12-week challenge, commencing on September 24 and culminating on December 20, participants will be assessed twice: Once in the beginning and then at the end of three months. They will receive a lifestyle score determined based on their lifestyle habits, including exercise frequency, eating habits, and physical activity levels. A panel of judges will decide who comes out on top. They will be evaluated based on the beneficial changes in their lifestyle, including improvements in their BMI and reductions in their HbA1C. Male and female contestants will form different categories. The top three winners in the 'physical' category will win cash prizes worth Dh5,000, Dh3,000, and Dh2,000, respectively. The top three winners in the 'virtual' category will receive RAK Hospital gift vouchers and other sponsored prizes. The other top 10 male and female participants will get complimentary RAK Hospital Swiss health check vouchers and other prizes. Certificates will be given out to the top 100 participants. How to join the contest The diabetic and pre-diabetic populations are the ones that will be given priority in the competition. People who have an HbA1c of 5.7 or higher are the only ones who can compete for the rewards. Participants in both categories will first need to register on the RAK Diabetes Challenge 2022 website to generate their unique registration number. Participants in the physical category should report to the RAK Hospital premises on September 24 or 25. Participants in the Virtual Challenge are free to submit their test results online after having them performed at any medical facility of their choosing.
