Numisbing company sells old notes for Dh1,500 to Dh4,000 to mark the occasion

  DUBAI – The UAE dirham turned 44 years old yesterday and a numismatic company marked the occasion by offering old notes for sale to collectors and other interested buyers. Numisbing, a company of numismatists founded by Ram Kumar, offered old Dh1 notes for sale at Dh1,500 each while the old Dh1,000 notes were being sold for Dh4,000 apiece. Before the UAE dirham came into existence, the region used the Indian rupee, the Gulf rupee, the Qatari riyal, Dubai riyal and Bahraini dinar during different phases. On May 19, 1973, the UAE dirham was first circulated in 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 denominations and the bills bore the picture of the Arabian horse. The horse symbol was later replaced with a falcon, the national bird of the UAE. When the national currency board was established, it issued new notes bearing various landmarks of the UAE. "The very first denominations were imprinted with landmarks that represented each emirate separately with the name of emirate on the bank note," according to Kumar. The Dh1 note bore a picture of the Clock Tower and Police Fort in Sharjah while Dh5 notes featured Fujairah's Old Fort. The Dh10 note had an aerial view of Umm Al Quwain imprinted on it while the Dh50 note showed the palace of the Ajman ruler. The Dh100 notes had a picture of Al Rams area in Ras Al Khaimah. In 1976, the Dh1,000 notes were introduced and the Al Jahilie Fort of Abu Dhabi and an old fort of Dubai were imprinted on the bills. The old notes were withdrawn from circulation in 1980 when the currency board was replaced by the UAE Central Bank. Kumar said the old notes have become collector's items, adding that many citizens and even expats who have been living in the UAE for a long time have preserved them as a part of the country's history."
