Botox injections on stomach not approved by US FDA being offered in some private clinics

  ABU DHABI – Emirati doctors have cautioned against undergoing weight loss procedures in some private clinics involving the injection of botox in the stomach to reduce a person's appetite. Dr. Abdelrahman Nimeri, director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (BMI) at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical Center (SKMC), said botox injections on the stomach are being offered by some private doctors even if it has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Each botox injection procedure reportedly costs Dh15,000. Botox is injected into the stomach to supposedly make a patient feel full and the effect of the injection wear off after six months. Nimeri warned that botox injections could lead to complications and even death. He said it is important for overweight people to avoid resorting to quick fixes and make sure that whatever weight-loss procedure they would undergo is approved by the US FDA. In the past, the BMI had treated patients who suffered complications as a result of metabolic and bariatric surgeries. On the other hand, Dr. Patrick Noel, head of Bariatric Surgery at the American Siurgercentre in Abu Dhabi, recalled a patient who had botox injection in the stomach that led to gastric necrosis. "His stomach basically was rotting and had holes in it. Botox injections is a fraud and lethal, It is not a safe or effective procedure to lose weight," said Noel.
