Emirati minister of state announces pledge during Brussels meet on Syria

  DUBAI - The UAE will give Dh250 million as aid to the Syrian people, the minister of state has announced. The announcement late on Wednesday came as the US has threatened unilateral action to stop the ongoing civil war in Syria following a chemical attack on a village in the rebel-held province of Idlib that killed dozens of civilians, including children. The chemical attack was blamed on the military loyal to President Bashar al-Assad but the Syrian army denied any involvement. UAE Minister of State Maitha Salem Al Shamsi made the announcement about the pledge for Syrians during the Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the region. The conference is co-chaired by the EU, the UN and the governments of Germany, Kuwait, Norway, Qatar and the UK. "The difficult humanitarian situation of the Syrian people is one of the great concerns of the UAE, which has always been among the first countries that took upon itself to help alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people, whether it be through relief and humanitarian support or through political and diplomatic efforts aiming to end the conflict," Al Shamsi said during the ministerial-level conference that drew over 70 countries and international organizations. The UN has put war damage in Syria at an estimated $350 billion or Dh1.28 trillion, including physical destruction and the loss of economic activity. Four out of five people are living in poverty, the UN also said. The civil war in Syria has displaced nearly half of the country's population with thousands of Syrians fleeing to neighboring countries and to Europe. Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley slammed the Russian and the Syrian governments over the chemical attack, suggesting that Washington is open to using military force to stop the civil war in Syria. Russia backs the Assad regime and has troops in Syria, which is helping the Syrian military fight rebels. Haley showed pictures of the chemical attack victims in an emergency session of the UN Security Council. "When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action. For the sake of the victims, I hope the rest of the council is finally willing to do the same," said Haley, who is president of the UN Security Council. Haley spoke as the body was considering a resolution condemning the Assad regime for the chemical attack. Russia is likely to veto the resolution.
