UAE: Environmentalists laud declaration of 2023 as the Year of Sustainability

Environmental experts in the UAE have applauded the UAE President's declaration of 2023 as the Year of Sustainability. Habiba Al Marashi, co-founder and chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), said: "We are a nation that makes things happen, and I am certain that the Year of Sustainability will give us the boost to be a leader for sustainability in the world truly," On Friday, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declared 2023 to be the Year of Sustainability, coinciding with the country's hosting of COP28. "Our history and approach to preserving the environment and sustaining its resources are constant. And I call on our society to adopt new ideas and specific initiatives that embody the civilized face of our country," Sheikh Mohamed wrote in a tweet. According to Sal Jafar, managing director of ESG MENA knowledge hub, the step is in the right direction. "The region has been the world's prime energy source for more than a century," he said. "COP27 and COP28 represent the foundation stone for the Middle East to be the prime renewable energy source for centuries to come," he added. BKM/ Expat Media
