UAE: Expat jailed after offering fake immigration visas on social media

A 43-year-old foreign national has been handed a two-month prison sentence for stealing money from victims to secure immigration visas. The accused placed advertisements on social networking sites and at entrances of buildings stating that his company was providing immigration visas to various countries and that he had a special offer for those planning to migrate. Using an office he had rented as the company's headquarters, he interviewed the victims and collected various sums of money from them. He also issued receipts with the company's logo in exchange for issuing visas. The Department of Economic Development noted in a letter that the company lacked the proper operating license. This was because the owner applied for the license as an individual institution for providing tourist guide services in the country. This license does not include the issuance of tourist or immigration visas. The accused denied the charges at trial by claiming he was merely a company worker. The court, however, found that the accused had indeed fraudulently taken the money from the victims. The court ordered him to pay back the money he obtained from the victims as visa transaction fees.
